Article Marketing 101

June 23rd, 2008 | Comments Off | Posted in Blog Optimization, Blogging Experiment, Internet Marketing

The concept of article marketing has been around for awhile and there’s a good reason for that. I’ve never found it to be the best method around but it will give you some decent backlinks and possibly a bit of exposure for a very small investment. The real beauty comes in the simplicity of it. You just have to write an article about your niche and click a few buttons.

There is one tip I have for you. I really wouldn’t bother hiring an article submitter to send it off to a bunch of directories. The duplicate content penalty removes a lot of the link juice and at the end of the day you’re not much better off than if you had just done the directory submission. The only way it would be worth it is if you use a service like Isnare to get thousands of submissions for $2. It’s still basically directory submission but at least it’s cheap.

EzineArticles –

This is just one of many sites in the genre of top article directories. Google doesn’t tend to penalize their articles, it’s not too rare for them to rank favorably in a search, and they’ll usually hold a decent page rank. This makes for a decent long-term linkback with a good chance of relevant traffic.

How exactly do you use it? Well like I said its pretty simple overall. You just have to write an article in your niche. They usually just need to be about 450 words long. Sign up for an account with them and you’ll get 10 free article submissions. The form is pretty standard for the industry. You’ll pick the appropriate category, write a little summary, and then add the appropriate link to your resource box. You cannot use a direct affiliate link in the box. It needs to be a link to a personal website or blog. It’s okay if that page is full of affiliate links as long as you keep the actual box clean. They’ll “review” your first ten submissions and decide whether you’ll get pushed up to a platinum rank. The truth is that any readable article will get through, so don’t sweat it too much. Your articles will be reviewed and accepted within a few days. That’s it.

Associated Content –

This is another good choice for article submissions. My tip is to write one article for EzineArticles and then take five minutes and quickly rewrite the article enough to pass copyscape. Then you can submit this one to Associated Content. If you want you can repeat for the process for submission to a few other top directories, but let’s get these two under our belt first. It works in a similar fashion to EzineArticles. You sign up for an account and then submit your pieces. Submission occurs through a four page form, but you can skip most of the parts about adding pictures and citing sources.

The important part here is to keep the entire article clean. They will not accept blatant advertising and they will ban accounts if you put affiliate links in the article. You need to follow the rules and link to your own site via the related links section. The really great part about their system is that they will pay you for the articles. You can usually get about $3 for a standard 500 word SEO article. If they don’t want to buy it you can submit it for free and still earn a few cents for the pageviews. It may not be a king’s ransom but I consider it incredibly cost effective advertising.

One special note is that Google seems to really like AC articles for specific topics. I once wrote a test article in a few minutes explaining why I liked Trident Splash gum. I stumbled it and dugg it and then left it alone. I’ve received about 950 pageviews over the last few months and it ranks in the top ten for Trident Splash. If you know what you’re doing you can get some great links while making money.

This is really basic information to get you started with article marketing. Learn the basics first with these websites and you’ll be on your way to capturing a nice chunk of your market.

The Power Of Belief

I was taught: the level or strength of your belief shows in your results. Another way to say it is that outcomes reflect beliefs, and the most important beliefs are, I think, as follows:

•What you believe about how the Universe works

•What you believe about yourself

•What you believe about your vision, idea, plan

A great "classic" book to read is Claude Bristol's MAGIC OF BELIEVING.

In considering the rich, successful, powerful and persuasive individuals
I've gotten to know, I would summarize their most significant beliefs as follows:

1A.A belief in unlimited abundance, not lack.

1B.A belief that the Universe, Universal intelligence,
God or whatever you call "It" responds to committed
thought (prayer) and determined action.

2A.A belief in unlimited and unrestricted capability ie. either that you can
do a thing as well or better than anybody else or that you can learn to do
a thing as well or better than anybody else; if someone else can do a thing,
so can you.

2B.A belief system of self-worth, self-respect, and self-
confidence based on realistic assessment of one's strengths and weaknesses,
attributes and flaws potential and limitations........a profound disinterest in perfection
in all things....a disconnect between deserving and being perfect.

3A.An unwavering, even somewhat stubborn and obsessive belief in its attainment.

The Power Of Conquering Fears

June 19th, 2008 | Comments Off | Posted in Dan Kennedy
The entrepreneur able to take business risks, experience failure, accept losses, and incur the criticism of others without insomnia, ulcers or remorse has overcome his fears of failure and humilation and acquired immense power. I'm currently working on a new book all about power, and one of my early ideas is that the the most powerful people are powerful because they have long ago shed any concern over what others think about them.

I watched the CEO of Archer-Daniels-Midland grilled by John Stoessels of ABC-TV about so-called "corporate welfare". Stoessels told him that, in one magazine, his face was put on a pig's body and he was called the greediest of all pigs at the Washington trough. The CEO calmly, literally with zero emotion, said, "Why should I care about that." Why indeed? The magazine will be gone and forgotten in days or weeks, but he'll still be CEO of the largest agricultural corporation in the world. It's a variation of the famous exchange between Churchill and Lady Astor; she said to him, "You are disgustingly drunk" and he said, 'Yes, madam, I am drunk, but you are ugly, and I will be sober in the morning."

Lacking this total freedom from fear of loss and/or others' opinions, a person is continually making judgements based on criteria other than his best beliefs about what will or will not work, should or should not be done, or is right or wrong. This is why politicians, including recent U.S. Presidents, actually have little power; Clinton the least of any recent President; they are, and he is, ruled by the public opinion polls.

Fear of others' opinions of the outcomes of your decisions and actions hamstrings you more than any other obstacle or handicap.

Buying and Selling Basics

June 18th, 2008 | Comments Off | Posted in Blogging Experiment, Buying Websites, Selling Websites

Believe it or not, buying and selling websites and blogs for a profit was a fairly foreign concept to me before deciding to sell Blogging Experiment. Since then however, I couldn’t help but learn a few things about the subject. Today I’m going to cover a few of the basic premises of flipping a website. Don’t worry, this won’t be too in-depth (I’ll leave that to Max, if you haven’t yet watched his video you should) but hopefully this will get the old juices flowing and maybe even give you an idea or two.

The Search

This can be easy or hard depending on the market. The internet does go through little spells of ups and downs and in the process some good websites get sold quickly at a bargain price. This would obviously be an ideal choice for the flip. You buy it, hold it for a bit, get some revenue on record, and then sell it when the market gets stronger. Unfortunately you will not find this too often. You’ll have to fight some of your base instincts and look for a bad website.

The Exam

This doesn’t mean you should buy complete trash. You’re going to have to look for a website that has some horrible mistake, one that just jumps off the screen and makes you want to close it. This can be a poor design choice, an awful color scheme, an incomplete menu, etc.

If you find this then take a minute and examine the content to see if it’s any good. In general you won’t find it worthwhile to fix bad content. Adding new information to a half-decent website makes sense, so don’t be turned off if the website doesn’t have enough. Rewriting the entire website is going to be incredibly time consuming though. Unless the domain name is golden then you would be in almost the same place as if you just started from scratch. In all honesty, there isn’t an ugly site or blog out there that can’t be repaired with some tender loving care. So, if the content is decent and the domain name is workable the next step is to start working the math for it.

The Math

Doing the math will help you to figure out how much the site will actually cost. I can’t really work out a scenario that will apply to everyone. Different problems require unique fixes with unique costs and no two websites are going to present the same problems. You’ll just have to work out the estimates as best as you can. The important step is to etimate the damage the last owner has done to it and decide whether you can fix it yourself, and if not, how much the proper coder will cost. You’ll probably want to have a better design and make the menu look more stylish. The header and logo almost always need a revamp on flipped sites too. Also include the cost of any marketing you plan on doing as well as any operating costs (paid authors, hosting fees, licenses etc) and you’ll have a pretty good flip estimate.

The Finish

Use your estimate to decide what you’ll bid and set a firm cutoff in your mind. While you’re at it see if there is a similar finished site for sale somewhere else and get a realistic idea of the possible sale price once you’re done with it. Flipping depends on selling the website at a good profit. This is obviously much easier if you don’t pay an arm and a leg for it in the first place. All that’s left for you to do at this point is watch and wait for the auction to wrap up. If you lose, just move on to the next opportunity. If you win, throw your plan into action and let the flip begin.

As I said, this is a VERY basic overview of site flipping and I’m far from an expert. But if this sounds like the type of thing you’d like to try, consider signing up for the course Max is offering. A small investment early on will save you a lot of time and money in the long run.

Broad Matching PPC: Good or Bad Idea?

June 16th, 2008 | Comments Off | Posted in Blogging Experiment, Internet Marketing

Most search engine has different matching types for their Pay Per Click (PPC) programs. Since Google has the largest market share of online searches, this article focuses exclusively on their keyword matching options.

Exact Match

Exact match is exactly as it reads; it will provide exact matches for the terms you type inside the brackets on your account. For example, the keyword you typed for the exact match should read [banana cake]. Ads that are related to this exact match will only appear for specific keywords; for example, it will appear for “banana cake” but not for “banana cake flour”.

Phrase Match

Phrase match is a little bit broader than exact match. You need to use quotes in your account if you want to take advantage of phrase matching. For example, [banana cake] in the exact match should look like “banana cake” for phrase matching as quotes need to be used. Phrase match will allow your ads to appear when searchers type in “banana cake bakery” or “best banana cake”.

The Extended Broad Match

Meanwhile, Google also made a third option available for webmasters: broad match. It is a little bit more complicated than the first two options but a lot of web masters use this option as well. With broad matching, you don’t need to use any special characters in your account when you type it. Google has a default response to these keywords; your ads will appear for search queries that contain “banana” and “cake”.

But over time, Google has introduced the concept of “extended broad match” as well. Now, for example, when searchers type in “dessert”, search results can show ads about “banana cake” and “fruit cake”. In its early stage, broad matching is a great way for your site to be exposed to its relevant audience. However, Google stretched this relationship that sometimes, it is difficult to see any logical connection between the searcher’s query and the displayed ads.

What Should You Choose?

Because of the problems associated with broad matching, many people recommend that you completely disregard the use of broad matching. On the other hand, if you decide to go ahead and use it, you should adopt a practice of using long tail terms (terms with several words in the phrase) to minimize the chances of ad misplacement. When there are fewer people competing for terms (as there are with broad matching), lower prices will often offer great opportunities for those that are able to master the tactic.
